Sleep Study Services
The Sleep Lab at Newton Memorial Hospital offers diagnostic testing
for the diagnosis and evaluation of sleep-related disorders such
as sleep apnea.
What is a polysomnogram or sleep study?
A polysomnogram is a non-invasive diagnostic test using scientific
measurements and data collection to evaluate and treat sleep-related
disorders. Several electrodes will be placed on your body to monitor
your sleep stages, respiratory function, blood-oxygen levels, and
heart rate. A technician will monitor you while you sleep. A physician
must order this test.
- After the data is collected a physician, who will recommend treatment
when needed, will evaluate it.
This procedure will assist the physician in diagnosing several
sleep-related disorders such as the following:
Insomnia - chronic inability to sleep.
Narcolepsy - A syndrome of a sudden, uncontrollable desire to sleep.
Periodic Leg Movements - an involuntary kicking of the legs while
sleeping
Parasomnias - movements occurring during sleep, including sleep
walking, night terrors, bed-wetting and grinding teeth.
Sleep Apnea - a cessation of breathing for at least 10 seconds.
