Become a Volunteer

Over 300 individuals volunteer at Newton annually and we continue to grow!

The mission of the
Volunteer Services Department is to:

» provide an adequate and competent in-service volunteer staff whose services augment those of the hospital personnel and benefit the patient, family, and visitor;
» assure the highest quality of supplemental help by carefully screening and training each applicant for a special assignment;
» provide a learning experience for volunteers to justify their time and energy; and
» Identify and respond to our community's changing needs by placement of volunteers into community outreach programs.

Requirements:
» Volunteers must be age 18 or over
» Volunteers are asked to complete a minimum of 4 hours in one time slot per week for a period of 6 months to one year
» Most new openings are weekdays before 5 p.m.
» Processing time is usually 2 months

Areas of Service:

Two extremely important and essential work areas are:

The Hospitality Shop - This involves serving in the restaurant or at the cash register in the gift shop.

The Bee Hive Thrift Shop - Owned and managed by the Auxiliary, the shop is operated by volunteer help out of its building at 123 Spring Street in Newton.

    How to Begin:

  1. Click here to view the Volunteer Application & Agreement. Print out both documents. Or contact the Volunteer Services Department at
    (973) 579-8370 and ask for an application.

  2. Complete and return the application and agreement.

  3. Set up an interview with volunteer staff.

  4. Attend a 7 hours orientation and training session.

  5. Complete the following health screening:
    A current Tuberculosis test provided by the hospital free of charge.
